Week 16 of the NFL

Week 16 of the NFL is here, and the playoff picture still isn't complete. As of right now, there are nine AFC teams and ten NFC teams that still have not been mathematically eliminated. The playoff picture as of right now is shown below, according to ESPN.

AFC

    1. Denver Broncos (11-3)
    2. New England Patriots (10-4)
    3. Cincinnati Bengals (9-5)
    4. Indianapolis Colts (9-5)
    5. Kansas City Chiefs (11-3)
    6. Baltimore Ravens (8-6)

NFC

    1. Seattle Seahawks (11-2)
    2. New Orleans Saints (10-4)
    3. Philadelphia Eagles (8-6)
    4. Chicago Bears (8-6)
    5. Carolina Panthers (10-4)
    6. San Francisco 49ers (10-4)

There are a few teams in the AFC who remain in the hunt for the very last wild card spot which the Ravens are holding on to right now. Those teams are the Miami Dolphins (8-6), San Diego Chargers (7-7), Pittsburgh Steelers (6-8). If Baltimore is able to get past the New England Patriots on Sunday, and the Steelers lose to the Packers, then Pittsburgh will be eliminated from the wild card picture. Pretty much all the Ravens have to do on Sunday is win, then they'll be safe.

While there are more teams in the hunt for the NFC side of the playoffs, it seems that the NFC bracket as it stands now is more of a sure thing. The four teams that are fighting to get in to the playoffs are the Arizona Cardinals (9-5), Green Bay Packers (7-6-1), Detroit Lions (7-7), Dallas Cowboys (7-7). Carolina and San Francisco will likely end up with the NFC wild card spots, all they need to do on Sunday is win and hope that Arizona loses. As for Detroit, Green Bay, and Dallas, they're all fighting for a divisional championship to get into the playoffs, which likely won't happen, although Detroit and Dallas are both playing struggling teams this week, and all they need to do is win to stay alive.

For the NFC, both Dallas and Detroit are favored this week, and Chicago and Philadelphia are playing each other, which are the two teams that need to lose in order for the Lions or Cowboys to have a shot at the playoffs. Philadelphia is favored in that match up, which is good news for the Lions.

For the AFC, Baltimore is playing the Patriots, which is good news for the rest of the wildcard teams as the Ravens are underdogs. If New England wins, then the three teams fighting for that last spot will have hope as long as they win too. If Baltimore pulls off the upset then that last AFC wild card spot is pretty much sealed.
